Why we advise against riding
I sell property, not excursions, so I can say this without any self-interest: elephant riding and circus shows have nothing to do with species-appropriate treatment. Making the animals compliant for that comes at a high price that visitors never see. The good news: there is a better kind of encounter — and it is actually the more rewarding experience.
How a sanctuary visit works
Typical half-day: hotel pick-up, an introduction, then feeding with bananas and sugar cane, a walk with the herd and, as the highlight, a river bath where you can watch or help from a respectful distance. Programmes are offered by, among others, Elephant Jungle Sanctuary and similar providers in the hills behind Pattaya.
How to recognise reputable operators
- No riding, no hooks, no tricks
- Small groups and limited visiting hours
- The animals can move away; contact is voluntary
- Transparency about the elephants' origins

Half-day programmes cost adults usually 2,500 to 2,800 Baht, children around 1,400 to 1,900 Baht, including hotel transfer and meals (as of July 2026).
Can you ride elephants in Pattaya?
Offerings exist, but we clearly advise against it. Watching, feeding and the river bath up close are the better experience — for animal and human alike.
Are the sanctuaries suitable for children?
Yes, feeding and watching work well from kindergarten age; toddlers up to age 3 are usually free.
How far is the journey?
The camps are located in the hills behind Pattaya; with transfer it is usually 30 to 45 minutes.
