Only with a work permit, which is tied to a suitable visa and a Thai employer. The usual expat visas such as the retirement visa or the property-based stay do not allow working in Thailand. Where in Thailand should I move to, is Pattaya the right choice?
Pattaya offers the largest expat infrastructure in the country, a short link to Bangkok, the sea and Western-standard hospitals. Chiang Mai is cheaper and cooler but far from the coast; the islands are prettier but pricier and less practical day to day. For a first move, Pattaya or Hua Hin are the most manageable choices.
What are the downsides of living in Pattaya?
Honestly: the hot season from April, the rainy months of September and October, the yearly visa paperwork including 90-day reporting, private healthcare costs that rise with age, and the traffic. The city centre is touristy and loud, which is why most expats live in Jomtien, Pratumnak or Naklua rather than on Beach Road.
Is Pattaya nice?
Pattaya is a city of contrasts. The bay with its new promenade, Wongamat Beach and the Dongtan stretch of Jomtien are genuinely beautiful, the party district is not. If you come for scenery, live towards Jomtien, Na Jomtien or Pratumnak Hill, and you will only see the loud side of town when you go looking for it.
Thailand or the Philippines, which is better for expats?
The Philippines win on English as an official language and a very simple long-stay visa. Thailand is clearly ahead on infrastructure, healthcare, roads and everyday comfort, and that is what decides it in the long run. If you want Western standards and first-class hospitals, you usually end up in Thailand. If you want the easiest visa rules, look at the Philippines.
Which new rules should expats know in 2026?
Three points, as of August 2026: the cut of visa-free entry from 60 to 30 days has been approved, though it had not yet come into force at last check.
