In brief: The best time to visit Pattaya is the dry season from December to April. January is considered the best month, with around 31 degrees, plenty of sunshine and only a few rainy days. Year-round, temperatures usually sit between 31 and 33 degrees, rising to 34 or 35 degrees from mid-February to May. The rainy season (May to mid-November, with the heaviest rainfall in September and October) usually brings only short, heavy showers in the late afternoon, after which the skies clear again.
The climate is one of the main reasons buyers from the DACH region come to Pattaya: warm all year round, plenty of sunshine, the sea right on your doorstep. But anyone buying a property should understand the weather more closely than a holidaymaker does. When is the best time, when does it rain, and what does that mean for using a second home and for choosing a location?
In this article I give you an honest overview of the climate in Pattaya. Dry season, rainy season, temperatures and the best time to visit, along with practical conclusions for property buyers. That way you can plan your stay and your investment with realistic expectations.

Pattaya's tropical climate at a glance
Pattaya has a tropical climate that is warm all year round. Temperatures mostly range between 31 and 33 degrees, and rarely drop below 24 degrees at night. There is no winter in the European sense, but rather two main phases: a dry season from roughly December to April and a rainy season from May to about mid-November, driven by the south-west monsoon.
For buyers from the DACH region, this means you can live outdoors all year round, by the pool or on the beach. Even in the rainy season it stays warm, and it usually doesn't rain all day. That is an enormous gain in quality of life compared with Central European weather, especially for older people.
- Warm all year round: mostly 31 to 33 degrees
- Dry season: December to April
- Rainy season: May to mid-November (south-west monsoon)
- Best time to visit: December to early March
The dry season and the best time to visit
The most pleasant time in Pattaya is from December to early March. During these months it is mild, sunny and dry, with comfortable temperatures and little rainfall. January is considered the best month: around 31 degrees during the day, plenty of sunshine and only a few rainy days. This is also the high season, with the most visitors.
The period from mid-February to May is the hottest of the year, with peaks of up to 34 or 35 degrees. Anyone who doesn't cope well with heat should bear this in mind. For most people, however, it is quite bearable, especially as air conditioning is standard everywhere. If you are planning a second home and want to escape the European winter, you will find ideal conditions from December to March.
The rainy season explained honestly
Plenty of exaggerations circulate about the rainy season. The truth: from May to October it rains more often, usually most heavily in September and October. But rather than days of continuous rain, the rainy season in Pattaya usually means short, heavy showers, often in the late afternoon, after which the skies clear again. In between there are many dry, sunny hours.
The rainy season in Pattaya is not constant rain, but short showers with plenty of sunshine in between. If you are flexible, you'll barely notice a difference.
Alexander ReifenschneiderThe rainy season even has its advantages: nature is green, the evenings are pleasantly cool, there are fewer tourists and prices are lower. For property buyers, this is precisely the ideal time to get to know the place honestly, as I describe in my post on renting before you buy. Anyone who only knows Pattaya in the high season sees only half the truth.
Location and drainage: what to watch for
During heavy showers, low-lying parts of Pattaya can experience brief pooling of water on the roads until the drainage catches up. This usually passes quickly, but it should be taken into account when choosing a location.
| Location aspect | Note |
|---|---|
| Higher-lying locations (e.g. Pratumnak) | lower risk of water pooling |
| Modern new builds | usually better drainage and underground-car-park protection |
| Higher floors | generally no issue |
| Low-lying, older streets | occasional brief flooding possible |
The good news: modern condo developments, especially off-plan new builds, are designed for the tropical climate, with good drainage and a well-thought-out construction. When choosing an apartment, a higher floor is usually the better choice anyway, if only for the view and the quiet. Which locations are suitable is something I describe in the districts for owner-occupiers.
What the climate means for second-home buyers
Many buyers from the DACH region use their Pattaya apartment as a second home, above all during the European winter. It fits perfectly: when it is cold and grey in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, Pattaya is enjoying its loveliest dry season. The months from December to March are ideal for a longer stay.
If you don't use the apartment yourself in summer, that is the European warm season and Pattaya's rainy season, you can let it out during that time. That way the property works for you while you are in Europe. You can read how letting and managing from afar works in my post on rental income.
How to plan correctly around the climate
To close, the key conclusions for buyers.
Experience both seasons. Visit Pattaya not only in the high season but also in the rainy season, to get to know the place honestly.
Choose your location carefully. Higher-lying locations and modern new builds have the advantage when it comes to drainage.
Time your own use and letting. Use it yourself in winter, let it out in summer, for many that is the ideal combination.
Prefer a higher floor. The view, the quiet and being less affected by the weather all speak in its favour.
